Checking In- Sofitel Hamburg Alter Wall

As part of the Come to Hamburg project, we were given the opportunity to spend 2 nights at the Sofitel Hamburg Alter Wall.  It is a 5 star hotel located in the heart of Hamburg. Here are our thoughts.

Where we stayed

Sofitel Hamburg Alter Wall– Alter Wall 40, 20457 Hamburg, Germany

Location

The location of the hotel was brilliant. Located in the centre of Hamburg it is only a 5 minute walk to the Rathaus. There are 2 train stations located within minutes of the hotel, both different lines – the U and the S. We were able to get a train directly from the airport which was convenient. We were also able to get on a train to take us around town. The hotel is located on a canal which gives it a quiet feel, and of course an incredible view.

Inside the hotel

From the moment you walk into the lobby of the hotel, you are in your own private oasis. You feel removed from the hustle and bustle of the city. To the left of the lobby behind curtains you will find the bar and beside this, the breakfast room. To get to the rooms you take the lift, which has glass side panels and this overlooks the canal. Everything is clean and tidy just as you would expect at a 5 star accommodation.

The Service

We genuinely could not fault the service in this hotel at all. Staff were friendly and really attentive. When we first arrived we were too early to check in, but wanted to leave our bags. There was a line at the reception desk. Immediately staff members came to assist us. We handed our bags over and avoided waiting. When we came back to check in staff brought our bags to our room which was a nice touch.

Housekeeping were also amazing. We happened to walk in on one of the housekeepers whilst she was turning our room down for the night. She didn’t want to leave until we confirmed that everything was perfect, and could not be more helpful. The turn down service is amazing. Housekeeping get the beds ready for you to sleep and leave a chocolate by the side of the bed for you.

The Room

The room itself was brilliant and incredibly modern. It contained the usual amenities such as a TV, mini bar, and safe. It was also incredibly clean which is important. The bed was large and so comfortable. At the end of the bed was a sofa and footstool and to the right was a desk and chair.

The bathroom was modern. The shower had a waterfall shower head which made me want to stay in there for hours. There was also a separate bath. The hotel provided the usuals like shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, and body lotion, as well as cotton buds and a nail file.

The room was also air-conditioned which I must say after spending the day getting sun burnt was a real treat to come back to. Additionally I have to add our view was amazing. We were lucky enough to be given a room with a canal view. We got to watch boat tours and people in row boats sail past.

The Amenities

The hotel had a restaurant and bar which were located near reception. There was also a spa area located in the basement which was so tranquil. In this area there was a pool with a waterfall to create a soothing trickling effect. If we had more time we would have taken advantage of this, but even spending 5 minutes checking it out made us feel calmer.

Breakfast

Breakfast was included for us, and it was amazing. It was served buffet style and there was a large selection ranging from a cooked breakfast to cheeses, along with yoghurts and cereals. There was also a chef near the cooked section ready to whip up an omelette or fried egg if need be. There were a range of juices, cold meats, breads and fruits to choose from as well. My favourite touch though had to be the “well being corner” where you could help yourself to dried fruit and nuts, as well as fruit smoothie shots.

The Bar

Of course we had to check out the bar.  It’s all table service and again staff are very attentive. There is a deck outside where you can sit and take in the view of the canal. It’s so relaxing and we definitely recommend it.

The Verdict

This hotel is really amazing. If you are looking for a luxury experience in Hamburg, then this is the place for you. The hotel has a great vibe, and the location is superb. We would definitely stay here again in a heartbeat.
