London vs Amsterdam: Some background

Before we get into the London vs Amsterdam debate here is a little bit of background on each city.

London

London is the capital of both England and the UK, and is the political, economic and cultural centre of the country. The actual city of London is small. It’s 1.2 square miles, with a population of 9000 people. I know what you are thinking that cannot be right.

It’s actually Greater London, that we all refer to as London. The population here sits at nearly 9 million.

London is really diverse with many people speaking multiple languages other than English. In fact there are over 300 languages spoken here.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands, and is famous for its canals, narrow houses and museums. There are about 821,000 people living in the city, but 1.2 million bikes! In fact bikes definitely rule when it comes to transport in Amsterdam. They have right of way over both pedestrians and cars.

London vs Amsterdam: which one is better for accommodation

One of the most important factors when deciding where to go on holiday is around accommodation. But in the battle of London vs Amsterdam which one has the better accommodation options.

London

London has excellent accommodation options, to suit all budgets. You get everything from hostel dorms, to your high end luxury hotels.

The closer you get to Central London the more expensive your accommodation will be. The rooms also tend to be a lot smaller with limited space for luggage.

If you are booking your accommodation make sure you book well in advance. You should also try and book accommodation near a tube station or public transport, as this will ensure you can get from place to place easily.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam also has decent accommodation options. For first time visitors the Old Centre, is one of the best places to stay. Accommodation can be expensive here, as this is prime location, so like London you definitely need to book accommodation in advance.

Rooms can be small at hotels in Amsterdam especially as space is very much at a premium in the city.

London or Amsterdam?

Both London and Amsterdam have excellent accommodation options. Both cities can be expensive so are probably on par when it comes to costs. London does have more options but that’s because it is a bigger city, and for that reason it is the winner.

London

Honestly there is just so much to do in London, we don’t even know where to begin. Here are some of the best things to do to give you a bit of a flavour with what to expect when visiting. For more information on things to do in London you can checkout this guide.

WESTMINSTER

Westminster is the classic touristy part of London. You have the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, and Westminster Bridge all within close proximity to each other. And that is only the start. It is perfect for first time visitors to London and gives you a real taste of the city.

THE LONDON EYE

This is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the city. It takes 30 minutes to do a full rotation, and ticket prices start at £25 with advance tickets being slightly cheaper.

MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES

London has a LOT of museums and galleries, a lot of which are free. Some of the best include the Natural History Museum, The British Museum, The National Gallery and more.

BUCKINGHAM PALACE

The Palace is the official headquarters and residence of the British Royal Family. One of my favourite things has to be the Changing of the Guard, which if you do get the chance to witness it actually pretty cool.

TRAFALGAR SQUARE

One of London’s most photographed public squares has to be Trafalgar Square. It was built to commemorate the Battle of Trafalgar that took place in 1805. These days it is swarming with tourists all trying to get those iconic shots of the fountains and the lions.

HYDE PARK

One of the things London is famous for has to the the green spaces, and Hyde Park is the best of the lot.

It spans 350 acres, there is a lot to see and do in the grounds. Some of the more popular areas have to be speakers corner, a place where to this day people gather to debate and speak to the masses. Famous speakers are George Orwell and Karl Marx.

There is also a large lake where in the summer months you can swim, or rent a paddle boat in the London sun.

ST PAULS CATHEDRAL

The cathedral is one of the most famous sights in London and has been the location for a number of Royal weddings and funerals, much like Westminster Abbey. The interior is worth a look, and if you are brave enough you can actually climb to the viewing platform for some incredible sights over London.

VISIT THE NEIGHBOURHOODS

There are a number of neighbourhoods that you have to explore in London. If you are into music then Camden is a must, whilst Instagrammers will enjoy the streets of Notting Hill or Chelsea.

TOWER BRIDGE & THE TOWER OF LONDON

Another of London’s most famous monuments that often gets confused with London Bridge, is Tower Bridge. The bridge was completed in 1894 which makes it nearly 123 years old. You can pay for entry into the Tower Bridge Exhibition, and more information can be found here.

Located next to Tower Bridge is the Tower of London a historic castle founded in 1066. If you are into history this is a fascinating place to visit as you get a full understanding of the history of the castle. This includes its time as a Royal residence and even a prison.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam too has a lot to see and do, although it is substantially smaller than London. Here are some. of the top activities.

DO A CANAL CRUISE

Considering Amsterdam is famous for its canals, a great way to see the city is from the water. We really do recommend going on a cruise to orient yourself with the city. Tours take about an hour and you can book these online in advance.

DISCOVER THE CANALS

We spent a lot of time exploring the city on foot. We loved the beautiful canals and discovering the leafy atmospheric streets. Amsterdam is one of those places that is fantastic to just get lost in and see what you find. Just watch out for the bikes!

RIJKSMUSEUM

The Rijksmuseum or the National Museum of the Netherlands is a great place to visit to learn all about the arts and history of the country. You can buy tickets on the day but if you are super keen then you can book your tickets here in advance.

ANNE FRANK HOUSE

This is probably one of the most well-known museums in Amsterdam. It’s a very sombre reminder of the horrors inflicted during WW2, and if you do get a chance to visit then do. You will learn all about Anne and her family, and you can tour the place they called home for 2 years whilst hiding from the Nazi’s.

EXPLORE THE EDGIER SIDE OF AMSTERDAM

Amsterdam is of course a very edgy city with several coffeeshops. These are shops that essentially sell marijuana, either to smoke or eat in baked goods.

Interestingly there are strict rules when it comes to drug use in the city. It’s fascinating walking through the edgier parts of Amsterdam which gives you insight into something we normally wouldn’t see back home.

RED LIGHT DISTRICT

Admittedly the Red Light District in Amsterdam isn’t going to be for everyone. But walking through is certainly an eye opening experience to say the least. It’s not as graphic or dangerous as you might think. You will see red-lit windows, sex shops, and strip clubs in the area, which might be out there for some but it’s a testament to the open attitude towards sex the Dutch hold. Also it is the oldest part of the city, and one of the oldest trades, so it is worth a visit.

FLOATING FLOWER MARKET

The Amsterdam Flower Market is the only floating Flower Market in the world. The shops are located inside a row of barges, and is a homage to the days when flowers arrived here by boat from the countryside.

London or Amsterdam?

London and Amsterdam are both really great places to visit with so much to see and do in both. There is probably slightly more to do in London, so that is our overall winner when it comes to attractions.

London

There are tons of really cool and unique experiences that you can book in London. From quirky museums, like God’s Own Junkyard, which is full of neon signs, to sleeping over at the London Zoo. There is something here to satisfy to most unique of tastes.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam also has some weird and wonderful things to do. You can go to a gallery full of fluorescent art, or visit a floating cat sanctuary. And don’t get me started on the quirky sex themed museums in the city.

Amsterdam is probably a little more eccentric. They are also a lot more open about things like drugs and sex, so you will definitely find some curiosities in the city.

London

London has some really picturesque places that you can spend days exploring. Some of our favourites are Hyde Park, St James Park, as well as neighbourhoods like Camden, Chelsea, and Covent Garden.

There are also lots of quirky little hidden gems in the city, particularly the little gardens and nooks you might stumble across. St Dunstan in the East, is one of the best places to visit that incorporates history, nature, and the urban sprawl.

It’s a quaint little garden on the site of a former church that was damaged in 1941. Whilst they decided not the rebuild the church the remains add to the atmosphere in this secluded garden.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam has much more of a classic European beauty. 9 Streets, is one of the beautiful quirky parts of the city with stunning boutiques, restaurants, and cafes.

You also have the lively and picturesque Latin Quarter, filled with quaint buildings ready to be photographed.

One of the best things to do in our opinion is to do a canal cruise and see the city from the water. It’s so beautiful and calming, and the perfect way to spend an hour or so in this unbelievable place.

London or Amsterdam?

London and Amsterdam both have their picturesque parts, but overall Amsterdam is the prettier city. The canals and tree lined streets, are just stunning, and provide the perfect backdrop for sipping cocktails on a nice day.

I know judging a city based on vibe is a slightly random statement but hear us out.

London

London has a past paced urban vibe. People aren’t as open and friendly as maybe some of the smaller cities in the UK. People also tend to be very reserved.

On the plus side, there is some excellent nightlife, which adds to the youthful, playful vibe in certain parts of the city.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a lot more laid back. The city has a very relaxed carefree vibe. It’s also a lot friendlier then say London.

It’s definitely got a more European vibe going on as well. There is a real openness when it comes to things like drugs and sex, that you certainly wouldn’t find in London.

London or Amsterdam?

We prefer the vibe in Amsterdam, just because it is a little bit more laid back and friendly.

London vs Amsterdam: which one is easier to get to

Getting to a city will obviously play a large part in your decision to visit. But is London or Amsterdam easier to get to?

London

London is a major travel hub into the rest of the UK. There are a number of ways to get here.

If you are travelling from other parts of the UK you are probably best off getting the train which will arrive at one of the below stations. All of these are centrally located, making it easy for you to get around.

• Paddington
• King’s Cross
• St Pancras
• Euston

You also have the option of getting the Eurostar, which arrives into London St Pancras station. There is a tube station nearby that will help you get to your onward destination.

There are also 3 major airports in London, Heathrow, Gatwick, and Stansted. All airports are easy to get to via train. Heathrow is the closest to central London. The quickest way is to get the Heathrow Express, which operates every 15 minutes between Heathrow and Paddington Station. The train trip takes 15 minutes.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam is also a major European hub, with KLM using Schiphol Amsterdam Airport as it’s main hub. A lot of flights from the US, Asia, and the Middle East, fly into schiphol, as do many European carriers.

Getting from the airport is relatively easy. You can get a taxi for about €40, or get a train for a fraction of the costs. Train tickets are under €6 and you will reach the downtown area in about 20 minutes.

There are also several options to get to Amsterdam by train. These arrive from all over the country, and Europe, at Amsterdam Centraal Station.

Finally you can also get a boat into Amsterdam, boats arrive at the port of Ijmuiden. You will need to get a bus from here into Amsterdam. This is around 40 minutes.

London or Amsterdam?

Both cities are incredibly well connected. London has a few more options, especially when it comes to flying, but that is because it is a larger city.

If you are wondering if London or Amsterdam is the easiest to get around here are our thoughts.

London

You will definitely need to use public transport when visiting London. The Tube is the easiest way to get around and see all the sights. You should purchase an Oyster card and top up with the required credit. Alternatively you can download the app, or use your debit/credit card to tap in and out of stations. Buses are also an option, although they are best used with the likes of Googlemaps so you know where. to get on and off.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a really great city to explore on foot, but that being said you will need to use public transport to get around and see the sights.

The tram is probably your best way to get around. There are 15 tram routes that run in the city, and you can purchase a day card, or one that lasts up to 7 days. These passes can also be used on buses or the metro. Although you probably won’t need to use the metro unless you are planning to head out into the suburbs.

If you want to blend in with the locals though, your best way to get around is by bike. There are several companies you can rent bikes with, and prices vary, but it’s a great way to get around and experience the city.

London or Amsterdam?

I’m going to call this one a tie. Amsterdam and London are both really easy to get around.

If you are a fan or architecture you might be wondering if London or Amsterdam is the better choice. Here. Let’s decide.

London

London has a real mix of modern and classic architectural styles.

You can witness some fine examples of Victorian gothic architecture like the Houses of Parliament. You also have baroque style architecture in the form of St Paul’s Cathedral, and regency architecture along. the aptly named Regent Street. These are just the beginning when it comes to architectural styles in London.

One of my favourite places to visit in London is Tower Bridge. From here you can see the Tower of London with it’s Norman military architecture, but in the same frame you also get to see modern London, including the Shard.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam also has some pretty impressive and expansive architectural styles. You have impressive buildings like the Amsterdam Centraal Station and the Rijksmuseum which are Neo-Gothic in style, as they both combine elements of Renaissance and Gothic architecture.

Let’s not forget the modern designs in the city. Some of the highlights include the giant bathtub that is an extension of the Stedelijk Museum, that brings in the tourists. Like London Amsterdam is a complete mix of old and new, which is fascinating when exploring the city.

London or Amsterdam?

Both London and Amsterdam are great when it comes to architecture. Our favourite is Amsterdam. I think one of the cool things about Amsterdam is that space has always been at a premium. So you will notice a lot of the buildings are tall and very narrow. This is because in the 17th Century you actually had to pay based on the width of your house. This adds to the style of the city, and is really cool to see.

London vs Amsterdam: which one is better for food

If you are a foodie, this section is for you. Here we look at whether London or Amsterdam is the better option for foodies.

London

London is incredibly multicultural which is very much reflected in the food options in the city. In fact London has more Indian restaurants than Deli and Mumbai combined. The city has so many incredible food options from around the world, including a pretty amazing Chinatown.

Of course, one of the things London is famous for is the traditional food. Pub meals are a big deal in London where you can eat things like fish and chips, sausage and mash, and other comforting delights. You also have places like Peggy Porschen Cakes, which is not only instagrammble but perfect for tea and cake.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam is another great place for international cuisine. There are restaurants and street food stalls to cater to all budgets.

One of the best things to do in the city is to take a food tour to nibble on some of the best treats Amsterdam has to offer.

Some of the must try foods in the city are things like dutch cheese, pancakes, and herring. Although the herring is definitely more of an acquired taste.

London or Amsterdam?

We prefer Amsterdam when it comes to food. The traditional food is so good, and who can resits dutch pancakes and cheese?

London

The nightlife in London is immense. There is honestly something to suit all tastes. You can visit swanky cocktail bars in Covent Garden, or see live bands in dive bars in Camden. London also has an incredible club scene with clubs like Fabric, and the Ministry of Sound that are world famous.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam also knows how to have a wild night out. Again you will find something to suit all tastes. From quirky speakeasy type bars, to more relaxed places serving wine and cheese, we absolutely love the nightlife in Amsterdam.

It’s a very popular stag and hen do destination, and is also one of the best cities in the world for clubbing. The stag and hen do thing can be a bit of a downside with Amsterdam. You get foreigners who turn up wanting a wild night, which can be problematic for locals.

London or Amsterdam?

Both London and Amsterdam are fantastic for nights out. London is a bit bigger and we find that there are neighbourhoods that cater to specific going out styles. For instance for indie music, and grungy bars you can go to Camden. Or if you want nice cocktails you can go to places like Covent Garden. This is a big plus when visiting as you tend to find similar style bars in one area.

If you are a lover of culture, you might be wondering if London or Amsterdam is the better destination for you.

London

London is one of the world’s cultural capitals. It’s known for it’s rich history, incredible art scene, and fascinating museums, many of which are free.

When it comes to museums three of the top museums in the world are located in the city. There are 4 UNESCO World Heritage sites here as well which again you can see why it is one of the cultural hotspots in the world.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam is another fantastic choice for culture lovers. For starters you have the museum quarter where you can indulge in art and history. You also have several music festivals including the Red Light Jazz Festival, or catch a classical music performance by the canals at Grachtenfestival.

London or Amsterdam?

Both are cultural hotspots, but London is the winner as it often claims the title of the world capital of culture.

Safety is of course an important factor to consider when visiting a new place. But is London or Amsterdam safer?

London

London is a huge city, and with any big city comes safety issues. For tourists though London is generally safe, and if you stick to the busy tourist spots you should be fine. It’s pretty well lit, and there tend to be people all around you even at night.

Obviously you should take precautions and have your wits about you. Petty crimes like theft and pickpocketing can be common so do be mindful especially in crowded areas or on the Tube.

There have been terrorist attacks in London, and these are rare. You will see armed police patrolling the streets to help reassure tourists that it is safe.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a pretty safe city, especially for tourists. In fact it is one of the safer European capitals. There are neighbourhoods you should avoid like anywhere, but these are not usually places tourist go.

The Red Light District is also relatively safe, but you should remain vigilant as tourists can be targeted for petty theft or muggings. Amsterdam is a place where people go to have a good time, and with drinking or drug taking you do make yourself more vulnerable to having items stolen etc, so do keep this in mind.

London or Amsterdam?

Amsterdam is definitely the safer city.

London

There are plenty of romantic things to do in London. You can take a romantic ride on the London Eye, or have a cocktail with a view at The Shard. On top of that you are spoilt for choice when it comes to bars and restaurants that will make for the perfect date night.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a great place to visit as a couple. The city is the perfect backdrop for a romantic weekend. You have the gorgeous canals, quaint bars, and a number of restaurants to enjoy. Even taking a walk or a boat trip is incredibly romantic in Amsterdam.

London or Amsterdam?

Both cities are perfect for couples but Amsterdam definitely has the more romantic atmosphere making it our winner.

If you are travelling with kids this section is for you. Here we look at whether London or Amsterdam is the better option for family travel.

London

London is a good option if you are travelling with kids. There are lots of spacious parks to explore, as well as museums, and galleries. The London Zoo is another popular attraction for kids, although it does get incredibly busy during the school holidays.

Amsterdam

You might think that Amsterdam is all parties, and Red Light Districts, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. There are so many great things to do with the kids like canal cruises, bike rides, museums, and much more.

London or Amsterdam?

Amsterdam and London are both great options if you are travelling as a family. If we had to pick one we would probably go with London just because there is a little bit more to do with kids here.

Travelling solo? Here we decide if London or Amsterdam is the better option.

London

London is great for solo travel. For starters it is easy to get around, particularly if you are using the Tube. It’s also relatively safe. You should definitely be aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts, but overall London is a safe and popular place for solo travellers.

There is also so much to see and do you will not be bored travelling alone in London.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam is very safe which makes it a great destination to travel to alone. There is also a lot to see and do, whether it’s walking around the city, doing a canal cruise, or even booking onto a group tour.

London or Amsterdam?

Both London and Amsterdam are great for solo travel. They are easy to get around, and there are so many things to see and do, so it’s definitely a tie.

London vs Amsterdam: which one is better for a budget holiday

Money is a big consideration when deciding where to visit. So is London or Amsterdam cheaper?

London

For a trip to London I would probably budget at least £100 per day (not including accommodation). You can spend less by planning appropriately and avoiding eating out at restaurants. You can also easily spend a whole lot more. Obviously costs will also depend on what you want to see and do, so our estimate is very much an average on what you could get by per day in London.

London is notorious for being expensive. On average a standard hotel room can cost upwards of £100 per night. If you plan to stay out of the centre of London, you need to factor transport costs in as well.

In terms of other essentials like transport, with an Oyster Card the Tube is capped at £7.70 per day as long as you stick to Zones 1 & 2. In fairness most of the tourist attractions are within this area anyway.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam is also an expensive city to visit. Accommodation is pretty on par with London and you can expect to pay around €130 per night as a minimum for a 4 star hotel.

You should budget around €150 per person per day, for things like attractions, food, drink, and travel. You can obviously do things a bit cheaper depending on where you eat and drink, but overall Amsterdam can be expensive.

London or Amsterdam?

Amsterdam is the cheaper option in comparison to London, although not by a lot.

London

London really is a shoppers paradise. You can find so many incredible stores ranging from vintage and alternative treasures in places like Camden, to fancy designer brands in places like Bond Street. Whatever your shopping style London has you covered.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam has a lot of choice when it comes to shopping. You have multi story department stores, fashion chains, vintage and independent shops and much more. From Flea Markets, and flower markets, to brand name stores Amsterdam has you covered.

London or Amsterdam?

London is the winner when it comes to shopping. You just have so much option, and you can basically plan a whole holiday based around shopping.

If you are planning to visit London or Amsterdam in the summer you might be wondering which is the better option.

London

Theoretically summer is a great time to visit London. The city comes alive with festivals like the Notting Hill Carnival, beer gardens open, and people are much cheerier in general.

On the flip side though, this is peak tourist season. That means that you will find long lines for attractions and hotel prices increase. You can also get humid days in the city where temperatures exceed 30 degrees Celsius. This can often be unpleasant particularly if you are getting the Tube as it get so hot and unbearable.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam is also great in the summer months. You can sip drinks by the canals and enjoy the sunshine. You will see people sailing around the canals in boats whilst sipping drinks, as well as people enjoying parks and public spaces.

Like London though summer in Amsterdam is peak season. This does mean more expensive accommodation. You also need to book any attractions in advance to avoid missing out.

London or Amsterdam?

Amsterdam is the better choice in the summer months. It’s great to be able to sit by the canals and enjoy the weather. It’s also less uncomfortable than London especially when it comes to using public transport in the heat.

If winter is more your thing you might be wondering if London or Amsterdam is the better option.

London

Winter in London is great because there are way less tourists. So you won’t have the queue for hours to visit the big attractions. It does get cold and rainy in winter, though so you will want to limit your time outdoors.

If you want to take advantage of the museums and the galleries then this is a good time to go. In December there are a number of Christmas markets to enjoy as well as ice skating rinks, in preparation for the holidays.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam is also a good place to visit in the winter. The city almost becomes this magical winter wonderland. You can ice skate on the canals (obviously if it is cold enough!), visit the Christmas Markets, and just enjoy the atmosphere.

It’s also a great time of year to sip mulled wine in a pub and watch the world go by.

London or Amsterdam?

Both London and Amsterdam are great in winter, but in our experience there is just that little bit more atmosphere in Amsterdam in the winter months. Fairy lights decorate the trees surrounding the canals, and the cold air adds an element of magic.

There is a lot of history here, and it is a place definitely suited to a longer break just so that you can fit it all in.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam is much smaller than London, but is still a cultural powerhouse. It’s full of European charm particularly as you wander around the canals, and take in the quaint architecture.

It’s also incredibly liberal, and gives you a fascinating insight into the values and life of modern Europe. There is both an edgy and traditional side to the city, and it’s interesting watching it all come together. It’s definitely a city break best taken slow, as you meander around the canals and gorgeous city streets.

Honestly London and Amsterdam are great places to visit. London is this bustling city filled with endless things to do, and Amsterdam is just beautiful and atmospheric. It is hard to pick one city although our favourite is Amsterdam. We loved the quirkiness of the city, the picturesque canals, and the chilled out vibe in the city.

What we will say though is if you want a city break where you can explore different neighbourhoods, visit some free museums and galleries, and shop till you drop London is the place for you.

But if you prefer atmosphere and European charm, head to Amsterdam.
