Melbourne vs Sydney: Some background

Before we get into the battle of Melbourne vs Sydney, here is some background on each city.

MELBOURNE

Melbourne is the capital city of Victoria, which is located in the south east of Australia. Melbourne is known for it’s thriving arts scene, coffee culture, and amazing food. It is the second most populated city in Australia after Sydney, and is often billed as Australia’s most liveable city.

Wondering if Melbourne is worth visiting? Here is a handy guide.

SYDNEY

Sydney is the capital of the Australian state NSW. It is one of the largest cities in the country, and the finance and entertainment capital, but not the actual capital. That title goes to Canberra.

Sydney is a very multicultural city, home to over 5 million people. Between these people there are over 250 different languages spoken. In fact over a third of the population were born overseas.

Wondering is Sydney worth visiting? Here is a handy guide.

Melbourne vs Sydney: which one is better for accommodation

Deciding on where to stay is a big deal for any trip. Here we look at Melbourne vs Sydney when it comes to accommodation.

MELBOURNE

There are several accommodation options in Melbourne, with the most popular choice being the Melbourne CBD. This is the perfect location to stay for short visits to the city, as there are excellent transport links.

The CBD is the more expensive part of Melbourne, so if you want some cheaper options you could also stay in St Kilda which is near the beach or Fitzroy which is a trendier area.

Accommodation costs vary depending on where you decide to stay. Also keep in mind during school holidays and other peak travel times prices will go up.

SYDNEY

The best place to base yourself in Sydney has to be in the CBD or around Circular Quay. Transport links are excellent and you are close to the main attractions. Accommodation here is more expensive, so unless you are aiming for a beach holiday in which case stay in Bondi or Manly, it is worth it to fork out a bit extra.

Accommodation costs average at around $230 per night for a 4 star hotel, although this does change depending on the time of year you book.

MELBOURNE OR SYDNEY

This is a hard one. Both Melbourne and Sydney are incredibly popular tourist spots so accommodation in terms of costs, and choice is pretty on par.

Melbourne vs Sydney: which one is better for attractions

Wondering if Melbourne or Sydney has the better tourist attractions? This is the section for you. Here we look at some of the top things to do in each city.

MELBOURNE

Here are some of the top things to do on a trip to Melbourne.

See Flinders Street Station

Flinders Street Station is one of the most recognisable landmarks in Melbourne, and the busiest railway station in the country. You will know you are in the right places when you see its copper green dome and distinctive yellow archways and facade.

Visit St Kilda

If you are looking to escape to the beach on a hot day then you should make your way out to St Kilda. This seaside neighbourhood is full of historic buildings, cafes, beaches, and a pretty rocking nightlife too.

Luna Park

Luna Park is a popular amusement park that was built in 1912, and is still incredibly popular today. You will know you are in the right place when you come across the iconic clown like face at the entrance (apparently his name is Mr Moon).

Check out the street art

Street art in Melbourne is a pretty big deal, so do make sure you check it out, particularly in the CBD. Hosier Lane, is one of the more famous places to go to admire the street art. If you want to explore a bit more then you can also book guided tours in advance.

Relax at the Botanical Gardens

Most cities in Australia have botanical gardens, but there is something a little extra special about the gardens in Melbourne. You can go for a bit of a wander around before settling in at one of the cafes for a well earned treat afterwards.

Enjoy the views at the Eureka Skydeck

If you enjoy seeing cities from a height, then we recommend a visit to the Eureka Skydeck. Located on the 88th floor of Eureka Tower, the Skydeck offers you a panoramic view of Melbourne.

It is recommended that you book your tickets in advance as lines can get very long.

SYDNEY

Now here are some of the best things to do in Sydney.

See the Opera House

One of the most recognisable buildings in Sydney has to be the Opera House. Designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, the Opera House is a must. You can attend a show, or even do a tour of the Opera House to delve deeper into the buildings interior.

Climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge

The other iconic Sydney structure aside from the Opera House is of course the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Construction began in 1923, and was designed to connect the northern and southern shores of Sydney’s harbour.

Get the Ferry from Circular Quay

If you want to see likes of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, or the Opera House from a different perspective we highly recommend getting a ferry from Circular Quay and checking out the sights. The best ferry route is to Manly. Along the way you get excellent views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. Alternatively if you want to get a bit closer to the Bridge you need to go in the opposite direction and get the ferry to Milson’s Point.

Manly

Manly is a suburb North East of the Sydney CBD. The ferry route from Circular Quay has been named the world’s most scenic commute, and honestly it isn’t hard to see why. So even if you don’t spend a heap of time in Manly it is definitely worth a visit.

There are several beaches and coastal walks that you can do here, and it is very different in atmosphere to the tourist centric Circular Quay. There are also some fantastic restaurants, bars, and cafes to enjoy during your time here.

Visit Bondi Beach

Bondi Beach is arguably one of the most famous beaches in the world, and certainly the most iconic in Australia. The golden sand, and ultra trendy setting makes it a popular spot with locals and tourists alike. It is hugely popular with surfers, and you can even take a lesson if you want to tick surfing at Bondi off your Sydney bucket list.

Relax in the Royal Botanical Gardens

Located just next to Circular Quay are the Sydney Botanical Gardens. It’s a 30 hectare site, that is also heritage listed. Entry to the gardens is completely free.

Visit Luna Park

Luna Park is located just across from Circular Quay. It’s a heritage listed amusement park with some pretty amazing views.

Even if you aren’t into theme parks we recommend getting a ferry out here. The views are stunning, and you get to see the Sydney Harbour Bridge from a completely different perspective.

Experience the views from the Sydney Tower

For a birds eye view of the city head to Sydney Tower. It’s the tallest structure in Sydney but also the second tallest structure in the Southern Hemisphere. From the viewing platform you get a 360 degree view of Sydney which is really beautiful.

MELBOURNE OR SYDNEY

Sydney is the more iconic of the two cities, so if you are a first time visitor to Australia then the sights are probably a little bit more exciting in Sydney. That being said if it isn’t your first time visiting Australia you may want to opt for the more culturally exciting city of Melbourne.

Melbourne vs Sydney: which one is prettier

Wondering if Melbourne or Sydney is the more picturesque city. Here are our thoughts.

MELBOURNE

Melbourne is a very picturesque city with grand architecture, particularly in the centre. There are a number of parks in the city, with one of the best being the Botanic Gardens. You also have a stunning coastline, and beaches within reach of the CBD.

SYDNEY

Sydney is also a beautiful city. Although it’s picturesque spots are definitely more famous than Brisbane’s. One of the most beautiful spots in Sydney apart from Bondi or Manly has to be Circular Quay. Here you can photograph the stunning city skyline alongside the Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. A top tip, is to head to the Botanic Gardens at sunset and admire the stunning views over the Opera House.

MELBOURNE OR SYDNEY

I think Sydney is slightly more picturesque especially when you have these incredible spaces like Circular Quay. From here you can photograph the Sydney Harbour and the Opera House, which are both beautiful up close.

Melbourne vs Sydney: which one has the better vibe

I know it’s strange measuring a city by its ‘vibe’. But here are our thoughts on Melbourne vs Sydney.

MELBOURNE

Melbourne has this uber cool vibe. It’s big on art, fashion and culture, and you can see this straight away when you spend a bit of time in the city. It’s still pretty relaxed, but less so than cities like Brisbane for example.

SYDNEY

Sydney has a pretty chilled out vibe. It’s slightly more conservative than Melbourne, as it is the business and finance capital of the country.

There is also a surfer vibe going on in parts of Sydney, around Bondi and Manly for instance. So you can definitely relax on the beach and watch the world go by.

MELBOURNE OR SYDNEY

Because I’m a fan of art and culture I prefer the vibe in Melbourne. It almost feels a bit ore European as well, which again is a personal preference.

Melbourne vs Sydney: which one is more touristy

Wondering if Brisbane or Sydney has more tourists? Here we have a look at both cities to decide.

MELBOURNE

Melbourne is popular with tourists, bit without big attractions like the Opera House or Sydney Harbour Bridge, tourists are more spread out. It’s less overwhelming, and a little bit more authentic in parts.

SYDNEY

Sydney is very touristy. It’s worse in the summer months where you often find yourself having to line up for long periods of time for certain attractions. Circular Quay is also brimming with tourists, so it can be a little bit overwhelming at times.

MELBOURNE OR SYDNEY

Sydney is more popular with tourists, and it can sometimes feel overwhelming. It’s more pronounced around places like Circular Quay where you have a lot of attractions very close together.

Melbourne vs Sydney: which one is easier to get to

Getting to a destination will of course be a major factor in deciding to visit. So is Brisbane or the Gold Coast easier to get to?

MELBOURNE

There are a few airports in the city, but the main one is Melbourne Airport. This is where the majority of domestic and international flights land in Melbourne.

The airport is about 23km from the city centre, and from here you have a few options for getting into town.

If you are wanting to save money the best way to get from Melbourne Airport to the city centre is via the SkyBus. This is an express bus that runs from the airport to Southern Cross Station in the city. It will take around 20 minutes to get into town, with buses leaving every 15 minutes.

This will set you back around $20 per adult, and tickets can be easily purchased on the day at the airport. Buses run 7 days a week, between the hours of 4am-1am.

If you are travelling in a group, or you have quite a bit of luggage with you, then getting a taxi or an Uber might be a better option. The taxi fare sits around $60-$70, and the plus side is you get taken straight to the door of your accommodation. Ubers are slightly cheaper, depending on the time of day, but you can get an Uber starting at $50.

SYDNEY

Changes are your trip to Sydney will be starting at Sydney Airport. Sydney Airport is the busiest airport in the country, with several flights arriving from around the country and the world. In fact you get a really good choice of international airlines flying in and out of Sydney.

The simplest, way to get to the CBD from the airport is via a taxi or Uber. It’s a 20 minute drive and will set you back somewhere around $45-$60.

There is also the option to get a train, which will get you to the city in about 13 minutes. This should take you to all the main stations like Circular Quay. If you are venturing out into the suburbs you may need to change trains along the way.

MELBOURNE OR SYDNEY

Sydney has a few more flight options, as it is the busiest airport in Australia. It’s also way easier to get from the airport to the CBD, so it is the winner here.

Melbourne vs Sydney: which one is easier to get around

In the battle of Melbourne vs Sydney you might be wondering which city is easier to get around. Here we look at both places to determine which one has better public transport options.

MELBOURNE

We found Melbourne relatively easy to navigate. We walked a lot of the time in the CBD, but did use buses and trams to visit some of the further out attractions like Luna Park.

Trams in the city centre zone, are completely free. You hop on and there is no need to scan your card at all. You will hear an announcement telling you when you have left the city zone at which point you will need to scan your card.

To use public transport you will need to purchase a Myki Card. It’s essentially a pass which is the size of a credit card that you can top up throughout your time in Melbourne.

You can purchase and top the cards up at selected stores across Melbourne, but the easiest is to find a 7/11 or a newsagent. The card costs $6 and then any additional credit can be added on top.

SYDNEY

Public transport is incredibly easy to use in Sydney. It’s also one of the best ways to get around. For a short trip to Sydney you are probably only really going to need to use the ferry and train.

Both services are easy to use. You can either get an Opal Card, which you can buy at selected newsagents across Sydney. You will need to top it up as you go. Alternatively you can just scan your credit card as you hop on and off the transport.

MELBOURNE OR SYDNEY

Melbourne and Sydney are both incredibly easy to navigate. If we had to choose we would go for Melbourne, particularly because of the free city centre tram travel.

Melbourne vs Sydney: which one is better for beaches

Any trip to Australia conjures up these images of spending time at the beach and relaxing. So is Melbourne or Sydney better for this?

MELBOURNE

Melbourne does have some pretty awesome beaches that you can visit. St Kilda is one of the most popular, with several bars and restaurants in the area. But you also have places like Brighton Beach, and Altona Beach to name but a few.

SYDNEY

One of the most famous beaches in Sydney and Australia for that matter has to be Bondi Beach. People flock here from all around the world to experience the sun sand and surf Sydney has to offer. But it isn’t the only beach option in Sydney you also have Manly Beach which is a short ferry ride from Circular Quay.

MELBOURNE OR SYDNEY

Sydney is synonymous with beach culture. Maybe it’s the warmer weather, but the beaches in Sydney are world famous – especially Bondi. Sydney is our winner when it comes to the best beaches category by far.

Melbourne vs Sydney: which one is better for food

If you fancy yourself as a bit of a foodie, you might be wondering if Melbourne or Sydney is the better option when it comes to eating.

MELBOURNE

Melbourne is world famous for its food scene. You have everything from fancy nibbles and seafood at places like the Pearl Chablis and Oyster Bar in the CBD. Or Gimlet, for oysters and caviar paired with incredible wine.

You don’t need to spend a fortune though for decent food in Melbourne. In fact one of our favourite things about the city is the brunch scene. We especially recommend Higher Ground, which is honestly one of the best brunches we have ever had. The food is incredible. The ricotta pancakes are unbelievable, as is the crab eggs benedict. It’s one of those places that actually does live up to the hype so definitely give it a go.

SYDNEY

Sydney is also a great place to go for food. Because of its multicultural population like Melbourne this is very much reflected in the food scene.

Whilst Sydney isn’t as good as Melbourne when it comes to food there is a lot of choice when eating in the city. From your independent coffee shops to your high class restaurants there is a little something for everyone.

MELBOURNE OR SYDNEY

Melbourne is the foodie capital of Australia and our winner here!

Melbourne vs Sydney: which one is better for nightlife

If you are interested in nightlife you might be wondering if Melbourne or Sydney has the better options.

MELBOURNE

Melbourne is a treasure trove of trendy bars. You’ve got chilled out dive style bars, fancy cocktail spots, and so much more.

It is fair to say that Melbourners take their nightlife very seriously. And with the warm weather outdoor drinking in beer gardens or rooftops are a big deal.

Music is also a big deal in Melbourne, with lots of incredible venues hosting amazing gigs and club nights.

No matter what your budget or your nightlife style you will find something to enjoy in Melbourne.

SYDNEY

Sydney has an incredible nightlife scene, particularly if you are into nightclubs. Some of the best clubbing spots are in places like King’s Cross, Oxford Street, and Darling Harbour.

If you prefer cocktails, we recommend visiting one of the amazing bars in Sydney’s CBD. Some of our favourites are the award winning Maybe Sammy near the Rocks, and Cantina OK in the city centre.

Basically whatever you are into when it comes to nightlife Sydney will have something for you.

MELBOURNE OR SYDNEY

Both Melbourne and Sydney are great when it comes to nightlife. I think this one comes down to personal preference. We prefer Melbourne, as there are some fantastic cocktail and wine bars. Others may prefer Sydney for it’s club scene.

Melbourne vs Sydney: which one is better for culture

If you are a culture lover you might be wondering if Melbourne or Sydney is the better choice.

MELBOURNE

Melbourne has often been referred to as the Australian capital of culture. It’s a very vibrant and creative city, and whether you are into the arts, design, fashion, live music, or even theatre Melbourne has something for you.

SYDNEY

Sydney is a great place for culture. For starters, it’s very culturally diverse with people from all over the world now calling the city home.

It also has a very vibrant arts scene, which probably doesn’t come as a big surprise considering it is home to a world heritage listed opera house.

Another big part of the culture in Sydney is based around beach and surf. There are many beaches in Sydney which means that locals are used to visiting and spending a lot of time outdoors.

MELBOURNE OR SYDNEY

I mean Melbourne is Australia’s cultural capital so it’s no surprise it’s our winner here.

Melbourne vs Sydney: which one is better for safety

Safety is an important factor when visiting a new city. So is Melbourne or Sydney safer?

MELBOURNE

Melbourne is a safe city. Particularly compared to some US or European cities crime rates here are pretty low. There are some neighbourhoods that are probably best avoided so do your research before you visit. If you are spending most of your time in the city centre or other touristy areas, you should be fine.

We noticed in the Melbourne CBD there was a lot of homelessness. This becomes more obvious at night. You might get homeless people shouting things at you from time to time, but generally you shouldn’t have any issues. It’s also nothing compared to homelessness in some US cities.

SYDNEY

As someone who has spent a lot of time in Sydney, I can honestly say I have never felt unsafe in the city. And overall according to the ‘Safe Cities Index’ Sydney is one of the safest cities in the world. That isn’t to say that you don’t get issues in Sydney. You do. But like any city in the world you just need to take precautions.

Always keep an eye on your belongings, and avoid walking home late at night. There are some neighbourhoods in Sydney that you should avoid, so if you are venturing out of the CBD make sure you do your research. Overall though as a tourist in Sydney you should generally be ok.

MELBOURNE OR SYDNEY

Generally, both Sydney and Melbourne are considered safe cities. They both have low crime rates compared to other major cities in the world.

Melbourne vs Sydney: which one is better for couples

If you are travelling as a couple you may be wondering in the battle between Melbourne vs Sydney, which city is more romantic.

MELBOURNE

Melbourne is a great option if you are visiting as a couple. There are so many great date ideas in the city. You can head to Luna Park and enjoy the rides, or lounge around at St Kilda beach.

You also have an incredible selection of food and drink in Melbourne. From fine dining to street food, there is something here for everyone.

SYDNEY

Sydney is a great option for couples. There are so many incredible experiences that you can share like climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge, or cruising around Circular Quay, or even having a romantic picnic for 2 on a secret beach.

On top of that there are so many romantic restaurants and cosy bars, that you can enjoy for your date nights

MELBOURNE OR SYDNEY

If you are interested in the food and drink scene Melbourne is your better choice for a couples break. Otherwise we prefer Sydney with it’s spectacular views, and romantic spots.

Melbourne vs Sydney: which one is better for families

If you are travelling as a family you might be wondering if Melbourne or Sydney is the better place to visit. Here are our thoughts.

MELBOURNE

Melbourne is perfect for families. You can enjoy some of the cultural activities in the city, explore the Botanic Gardens, or even have an interactive experience at the top of the Melbourne Skydeck.

A day out at Luna Park is another great option for families. The theme park has a number of rides and is incredibly close to the beach where you can spend your afternoon.

SYDNEY

Sydney is also an excellent option for families. There are so many amazing things to do. From spending time at one of the beaches, to checking out the rides at Luna Park.

You also have a lot of family friendly attractions around Darling Harbour such as the Chinese Garden of Friendship, the Maritime Museum, and even Madame Tussauds.

MELBOURNE OR SYDNEY

Both cities are perfect when it comes to family fun. If we had to choose we would say that Sydney is the better choice because things are a little closer together, making it easier to get around with kids.

Melbourne vs Sydney: which one is better for a budget holiday

When it comes to the battle of Melbourne vs Sydney you might be wondering which city is cheaper. Here we go into detail on the travel costs for each city.

MELBOURNE

Melbourne can be quite expensive, particularly in comparison to US standards. If you are staying for a week, you want to budget around $1200 – $1400 per person. This is not including accommodation costs.

Melbourne has a lot of really good food and drink options but these can be quite pricey, so keep this in mind when budgeting.

Accommodation costs are similar to Sydney, although again this is dependant on the time of year you book. We found a really good deal on a 4 star hotel in the city centre, which cost $170 per night. This was off season though, so expect to pay around $250 during peak seasons.

SYDNEY

Sydney is one of those places that is constantly making those ‘top 10 most expensive places in the world’ lists. And it makes sense. It’s a bustling city, and apparently it is the 12th most expensive city in the world when it comes to property prices.

If you are wondering how much to budget we would recommend around $300 per person per day on a trip to Sydney. This will include things like tours, transport and food and drink. You can obviously spend a lot more or a lot less depending on your travel style.

If you want to cut costs, avoid eating around places like Circular Quay, use public transport, and book your accommodation well in advance.

And speaking of accommodation, this can be pricey, particularly in the peak summer months. So make sure you book well in advance, and try to avoid Circular Quay.

MELBOURNE OR SYDNEY

In our experience Melbourne is cheaper than Sydney, but only just. All in all they are both expensive places to visit, although you can do things cheaply.

Melbourne vs Sydney: which one is better for shopping

Are you wondering if Melbourne or Sydney is better for a shopping holiday? Well, read on.

MELBOURNE

Melbourne is a shopaholics dream. The CBD is one of the best places to do this particularly around Bourke Street. You have lots of large malls with so many great places to shop.

You also have these old shopping arcades like the Block Arcade, with luxury boutiques, and cafes, that are great to stroll through and even better to shop in.

If you head out into the suburbs you can find vintage boutique shops, and some great bargains too.

SYDNEY

Sydney is one of the shopping capitals of Australia. You will find everything from high end designer shops, to boutique Australian made brand stores.

The expansive CBD is a good place to start, particularly places like the Pitt Street Mall and World Square.

There are also tons of markets in Sydney. You get fruit and veg markets, vintage and secondhand markets like the one in Rozelle, and there is even a weekend market in The Rocks.

MELBOURNE OR SYDNEY

Melbourne is the better option for shopping. There is more choice when it comes to stores, particularly boutique style shops.

Melbourne vs Sydney: which one is better in summer

If you are visiting Australia in the summer months (December – February) you might be wondering if Melbourne or Sydney is the better option.

MELBOURNE

Summer in Melbourne is peak travel season, so accommodation costs can be high. You may also encounter crowds when visiting some of the city attractions.

The temperature ranges from 20-27 degrees Celsius. But honestly it can be really unpredictable. We visited in January and on one day I was wearing a cardigan because I was cold. Two days later it hit 38 degrees Celsius. One thing to consider though, is that there is far less humidity in Melbourne.

The good thing with Melbourne is that there are beaches close by that you can visit to cool down.

SYDNEY

Sydney is primed for tourism in the summer months. Temperatures range from 19-30°C, and it can get quite humid. But it is perfect if you are wanting to visit the beaches in the city, and make the most of the Australian Summer.

The downside of visiting in summer is that this is peak travel season. Kids are off school in December and January, and this also coincides with Christmas and New Years holidays. For this reason hotels can be quite expensive, and tourist attractions can be busy.

MELBOURNE OR SYDNEY

Melbourne and Sydney are both excellent summer holiday spots. If we had to choose we would pick Sydney as the better option. The beaches are a lot nicer, and nothing beats sitting outside by the Opera House with a glass of wine on a sunny day.

Melbourne vs Sydney: which one is better in winter

If you are planning to visit Australia during the winter months of June – August, you might be wondering if Melbourne or Sydney is better.

MELBOURNE

Melbourne is a lot cooler in the winter months, with temperatures comparable to some European cities. On average temperatures are around 7 -16 degrees Celsius and rain is likely.

You will need a jacket or coat particularly at night, and umbrellas are also a must. Tourist numbers tend to drop in winter, but this is a great time to explore some of the museums, or get cosy in a trendy Melbourne bar.

SYDNEY

Don’t let winter put you off from visiting Sydney. It’s actually a really lovely time to go. For starters it’s a lot quieter especially around the beaches. Because there are less people around hotel prices tend to be a bit cheaper too.

Winter in Sydney is June – August, and temperatures are actually pretty mild. It ranges from 9-20°C which is light jacket weather.

MELBOURNE OR SYDNEY

Sydney is the better choice for milder weather and alfresco dining in the winter months. But if you want a more European cosy feel, Melbourne is for you.

Melbourne vs Sydney: which one is for me

Here is our final summary on the Melbourne vs Sydney debate in case you haven’t yet decided which city is for you.

MELBOURNE

Melbourne is the cultural capital of Australia. It prides itself on its food and drink scene. It’s also a great place to experience the arts in Australia.

Melbourne is very fast paced, with milder temperatures. It also has a bit of everything including theme parks, world class restaurants, fantastic museums, and beaches.

SYDNEY

Sydney is one of the most famous cities in the world. And whilst it is relatively laid back, there is a lot of hustle and bustle in the city, so it is never boring. Yes it is popular with tourists and can be crowded sometimes but there is good reason for that.

MELBOURNE OR SYDNEY

This is a really tough choice because Melbourne and Sydney are excellent options for a city break in Australia.

For first time visitors, we recommend Sydney. You definitely want to see the Opera House and Sydney Harbour if you are travelling all the way to Australia. It’s also a perfect example of Australian culture, history, and beaches.

If you prefer a more cultural experience including some of the best food and drink options in Australia, then Melbourne is the better option. It’s perfect for wandering around, appreciating the street art, and sipping coffee and cocktails.

Hopefully this guide to Melbourne vs Sydney has been useful to you. And if so you can pin it for later below.
